Bill Cobbs, the stage character actor who appeared in more than 120 films and television shows, has died. He is 90 years old. He is best known for his beloved film appearances in Night at the Museum, The Bodyguard and The Hudsucker Proxy, as well as the television shows The Sopranos, The West Wing and Six bases Under.

He died Tuesday evening (June 25) at his home in Riverside, California, his publicist Chuck Jones told TMZ. Among the many fans paying tribute to Cobbs on social media was Abbott Elementary star Sheryl Lee Ralph, who wrote “Emmy winner, working actor, and extraordinary human being, Bill Cobbs transitioned to acting on a higher stage on June 25 after celebrating his 90th birthday in June.
RIP 16th.” Cobbs won an Emmy in 2020 for Outstanding Limited Performance in a Daytime Program after appearing on the children's show DinoDana. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 16, 1934, Cobbs held several jobs before pursuing an acting career. He served in the US Air Force as a radar technician eight times before working for IBM and as a car salesman. It was not until 1970, at the age of 36, that he moved to New York in search of the stage and screenplay.
Cobbs made his film debut with a brief appearance in the 1974 crime drama The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. She worked steadily throughout the 1980s and in 1992 landed a noteworthy role as director Whitney Houston in the romantic drama The Bodyguard. In 1994, the Coen brothers cast Cobbs as Moses in The Hudsucker Proxy, the central character whose mystical ability to stop time helps Tim Robbins' Norville Barnes.
In 1996, Cobbs played a jazz pianist in The Things You Do! by Tom Hanks, and went on to play a coach who decides to let a basketball player's dog join his platoon in 1997's Air Bud. Cobbs joined the cast of The Sopranos in 2000, playing Reverend JamesSr.

Cobbs continued to work until his final days, playing a prominent role as the security guard Reginald protects in 2006's Night at the Museum and returning for the 2014 sequel. In a statement posted on Facebook, his family Thomas Cobbs wrote on behalf of his family “Bill died with peacefully at home in California. A cherished partner, extended family member, uncle, surrogate parent, godfather and friend, Bill recently and joyfully celebrated his 90th birthday wrapped in his beloved bones.
As a family we are confident knowing Bill has created eternal peace and rest with his Heavenly Father. We ask for prayers and encouragement during this time. ”
