This is not the first time Miss USA has experienced mental health problems
In fact, mental problems are not the first thing the participants in this prestigious beauty event have experienced. Quoted from the Showbiz channel Liputan6.com, Wednesday (8/5/2024), Cheslie Kryst, Miss USA 2019 breathed her last breath on Sunday, January 30 2022, after jumping from a 60-story building in New York City in the morning.
Cheslie Kryst, who lived on the ninth floor of the Orion building, was seen for the last time on the terrace on the 29th floor. After that, Miss USA 2019 was found tragically dead.
The family also conveyed the sad news to the public. They said that Kryst had spread a lot of love by serving others.
She realized this while working as a lawyer, participating in Miss USA, and being a presenter. Cheslie Kryst's family also made a request to the public. They asked the public to respect the family's privacy.
A few hours before she died, Cheslie Kryst shared her last upload on Instagram in the form of a photo of herself. The post was accompanied by the caption, "May today bring you rest and peace."
Depression due to frequent bullying
The state of the pageant world is not as beautiful as it looks. Cheslies Kryst's death due to depression and suicide was thought to have been triggered by the bullying she received during the selection process for the beauty pageant.
Before her death, Kryst was battling high-functioning depression, according to her mother April Simpkins. Simpkins explained that Cheslie Kryst's cheerful and lively personality masks inner struggles. The beauty queen's mother also said that her daughter lives a public and private life.
Cheslie Kryst was also among the 10 contestants in the next Miss Universe that year. In an essay last March, just 10 months before her death, Kryst spoke of fearing that she was "running out of time to care."
Kryst wrote about being teased online and how winning Miss USA at age 28 made her a target for bullies. However, many of his friends said on Monday, January 31, 2022 that they were shocked by his death and did not realize that he may have suffered from mental health problems.
Publicly, Kryst has never shared any specific struggles with mental health. In 2019, he mentioned frequently speaking with a counselor to keep his mind healthy, but there was no indication that he was in any form of distress.
