History of Slope Day.

  There's a long history of a spring- time gathering also at Cornell University. While this event has taken  numerous shapes over the formerly century, one common thread persists festivity. 

in this moment, the event we affectionately call" Slope Day" inherits a proud century long tradition as a time- end gathering and festivity of the Cornell Community. From the morning. 1901 The first recorded" Spring Day" takes place. 

Spring Day was a festivity of the end of time- avoidance and imminent warm downfall. This tradition continued for the coming partial century. Over the times, Spring Day was comprised of events ranging from variety shows to circuses. 

One time there was a mock bullfight; another time scholars, staff, faculty and guests enjoyed the Fraternity Float cortege. While  numerous of these events took place at and were centered around the University's open spaces( including Libe Slope), there were  numerous exertion that took place indoors, as well as off lot. 

1960  demurrers and uneasiness agonized the University. There was little time and place for any festivity during these times. In addition to civil  demurrers and  cooperative  disharmony,  numerous  minimal legal drinking age restrictions were lifted. During this time  numerous countries began lowering their  minimal legal drinking age( MLDA) from theirpost- prohibition high of twenty one. 

1979 Cornell Dining patronized a  regale on Libe Slope on the last day of classes and Spring Fest was born. This so- known" Great Feast" started in the afterlife, and was centered on a big funk regale and live music. New York State's MLDA of eighteen made it possible for alcohol to be served at Spring Fest, as utmost Cornell scholars were over eighteen by the end of the  academy time. 

1984 The civil government passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act in 1984, calling that all countries had two times to increase their MLDA to 21 or lose Civil- aid trace backing. New York's changed their MLDA because of this act, and so the university alcohol policy was changed to reflect the change in state law. 

1987 Robert Cray band performed at Spring Fest, patronized by the Cornell Concert Commission. 

1988 Spring festivity was cancelled! After too  numerous scholars admitted to Gannett the time ahead, the university decided to not hire a musical act. 

1989 In the face of these legal changes and the public sentiment that rained it, it was no longer  doable for the university to allow the event. scholars formed the Springfest Coordinating Committee to promote safe drinking habits and to give alcohol-free exertion as an volition to drinking. Slope Day, as it came to be called, came an informal gathering of scholars on university property. During that time, the focus of Slope Day shifted from food, music and festivity to wide and  unbridled alcohol consumption. 

1993 An association, known as SOS, was created in order for scholars, staff, and faculty to give a" positive presence" on Slope Day. Now known as the Slope Day Volunteer Committee, these assessments operate as a council of the Slope Day Programming Board, and fulfill vital places in the event from working to  insure the safety of those attending, to manning the gates,  hedge, and checkpoints, distributing water, and keeping the pitch clean. 

Without pupil and staff assessments in their brightly  multicolored t- shirts, Slope Day could not be! 1999 Pupil opinion girding the future of the event began to shift, as substantiated by the creation of SlopeFest, anon- alcoholic exertion- rested event featuring festival- type games and lifts, live music, free comps, and other lodestones. 

SlopeFest, taking place on West Campus, was meant to accompany Slope Day and accommodate scholars during times when they weren't drinking as well as give an alcohol-free terrain for scholars asking one. 

2001 HunterR. Rawlings III, also  chairman of Cornell University, issued a charge to the President's Council on Alcohol and Other  medicines to assemble a group of staff, faculty and scholars to critically assess and address the part that alcohol and other  medicines( AOD) played on Slope Day. This group came known as the Slope Day Steering Committee. 

2002 The Steering Committee began to take over corrective measures to address the alcohol related issues girding Slope Day, including moving the musicale back onto the pitch. 

2003 A new and advanced Slope Day was created by a Steering Committee of scholars, faculty, and staff. Live entertainment( Rusted Root and Fat Joe) brought to the pitch, provisioned food and alcohol service from Cornell Dining, and  comps came a part of the festivity as well. A pupil- administration cooperation was created, one where scholars would take the lead in planning and organizing programming and direction for the day. The Slope Day Programming Board was created and funded by the Student Assembly to organize the event and bring bigger and better entertainment to the day's. 

2004 The festivity continued, with performances by Kanye West and OAR, the return of SlopeFest, and record crowds in attendance. 

2005 The Slope Day Programming Board brought The Starting Line, The Game and Snoop Dogg. The bands played for record crowds and Slope Day's was a huge success! 

2006 formerly again, Slope Day was a lot of fun for all, featuring Ben Folds and Talib Kweli with special guest Acceptance. SlopeFest was moved from West Lot to Ho Plaza. 

2007T.I. with special guests television on the Radio and Catch 22 took the stage and pitch by storm. New additions to SlopeFest made it a larger megahit than ever ahead. Prizes were raffled off to winners of certain  festival games before the music began. 

2008 Gym Class icons brought original faculty to the pitch with energetic openers Ted Leo and the apothecaries and Hot Hot Heat. Indeed the rain couldn't keep scholars from celebrating the end of the semester. Libe Slope came greener with Cornell Dining's switch to biodegradable products( including sludge plastic mugs).

2009 The Pussycat Dolls took command of the stage as the first all-womanish act for Slope Day. Openers the Apples in Stereo and Asher Roth pumped the crowds for the main act as neither the trouble of rain nor recession could help this Slope Day from being enjoyed by the huge  cult that attended. 

2010 In the Lot knowledge Tour, Drake headlined with a communication of sustainability to a drinking crowd. The  cult was warmed up by the beautiful  downfall and by openers Francis and the Lights and k- zilches. 

2011 Grammy Award winning  hip- hop artist Nelly made sure Slope Day wasn't just a dream for Cornellians. Excellent  downfall and openers Ra Ra Riot and The Cool  youths brought everyone out to the pitch beforehand to spend time with  buddies and celebrate the end of another great time. 

2012  international star Taio Cruz lit up the pitch like it was dynamite. Supporting artists Neon Trees and The Gripers brought record early crowds out to enjoy the perfect  downfall and celebrate with the Cornell community. 

2013  hip- hop artist Kendrick Lamar headlined Slope Days. Supporting artists included DJ 5 & A Dime and Hoodie Allen. 

2014 Ludacris headlined Slope Day with performances by Matt and Kim and 3Lau. 

2015 Slope Day was headlined by Chance the Rapper with supporting performances by artists Salva and Magic! 

2016 Cash Cash and Walk The Moon took the stage, supported by R-  municipality. 

2017 Misterwives and Big Gigantic performed at Slope Day in 2017, supported byBrasstracksS'Natra. 

2018 Galantis, Young  disasters, and Dreezy rocked Slope Day.

2019-2024...
